Transformer Assessment & Reconditioning

A power transformer is the most valuable asset in the yard and the most expensive to lose. ESS has always spent as much time keeping transformers healthy as it has installing new ones.

Most of that is field work. Assess the unit, decide what it actually needs, and do the work on site rather than ship a several-hundred-ton asset out and back.

What the work covers

• Field assessment of transformer condition
• Reconditioning to extend service life
• On-site oil reconditioning: draining, degasifying, and vacuum-refilling
• Oil changes and moisture removal without pulling the transformer
• Installation and commissioning of new units, up to 600MVA at 525kV class
• Field servicing and repair on in-service transformers

The oil does more to keep a transformer alive than almost anything else. Moisture and gas work into it over the years and wear down the insulation, so drawing the old oil, reconditioning or replacing it, and pulling the unit back to a clean vacuum fill is some of the highest-return work you can do on an aging fleet. ESS runs it on site with a mobile degasifier, so the transformer never leaves the pad.
