Built by One Family,
Since 1978

ESS International has built high-voltage substations across the Western United States since 1978. It started as a family company, and it still is one.

Nearly five decades of substations

The company was founded in 1978 and incorporated in Arizona in 1989 as E.S.S. International Corporation. Over the years that followed, ESS grew from distribution-class work into 500kV transmission, installing transformers and EHV apparatus for many of the largest utilities in the West. Hundreds of projects across seventeen Western states came out of that stretch.

A career, and a handoff

Edward Zaletel spent roughly six decades in high-voltage work and ran ESS for most of its history. He has now fully retired. The company passes to his son, who grew up around the work and holds it to the same standard it was built on.

Safety, quality, experience

The tagline has not changed since the beginning. On a live substation those three words are not slogans. A mistake around energized 230kV or 500kV equipment is not one you walk back, so every job is planned and sequenced with that in mind.

Where we work

ESS is headquartered in Arizona and built its name across the Western grid, from Arizona to Washington and east across the plains, and now runs a satellite office in Florida. Each state has its own utilities and its own challenges. You can see them all on the service area pages.
