Substation Construction

ESS builds high-voltage substations across the full range, from 69kV distribution stations up to 500kV transmission. The work spans new greenfield builds, expansions added to stations that stay energized, and upgrades to existing equipment.

A substation is only as good as the sum of its parts, so every stage is held to the same standard whether it is a clean new site or an addition threaded into live steel.

What the work involves

• Site grading, foundations, grounding grid, and raceway
• Steel structure placement and rigid or strain bus assembly
• Transformer, breaker, and disconnect switch installation
• High-voltage and control cable installation
• Protection and control: relays, current and potential transformers, control-building electrical
• Fiber-optic controls and communications
• Lightning protection and station service
• Testing, commissioning, and energization

On expansions, sequencing and clearances matter as much as the hardware. Crews build alongside energized equipment while the existing load keeps flowing, so the outage plan is part of the design from day one.
