High-voltage substation construction and transformer work across Wyoming. Here is the grid ESS operates in.
Wyoming's electricity generation remains dominated by coal, which supplied roughly 60 percent of in-state generation in 2024, followed by wind at more than 20 percent and natural gas near 13 percent. Hydropower and a small but growing amount of solar make up most of the remainder. The state produces far more electricity than it consumes and exports the surplus to neighboring states.
Because Wyoming generated about 2.6 times its in-state consumption in 2024, moving surplus wind and coal power to other states depends on long-distance transmission. Major projects include PacifiCorp's Energy Gateway program (Gateway West and Gateway South) and the TransWest Express HVDC line, a roughly 730-mile link from the Chokecherry and Sierra Madre wind area near Rawlins toward the Nevada market. PacifiCorp has also scheduled retirements of coal units in Wyoming over the coming years.
