High-voltage substation construction and transformer work across Oklahoma. Here is the grid ESS operates in.
Natural gas is the largest source of electricity in Oklahoma, at roughly 50 percent of net generation, and wind is second at about 40 percent. Coal has declined to under 10 percent, with a small share from hydroelectric dams. Oklahoma is among the leading states for wind generation, supported by strong wind resources across the western part of the state.
Oklahoma is a member of the Southwest Power Pool (SPP), and moving its large and growing wind output to demand centers depends on adequate long-distance transmission. Transmission congestion and curtailment can occur when wind generation exceeds available line capacity, and new generation faces lengthy interconnection queues. Aging transmission and distribution infrastructure adds to reliability and upgrade needs.
